Frequently asked questions

What is a good engagement rate?

It depends on the platform and your audience size. As rules of thumb, 1–3% is average on Instagram, TikTok runs much higher (often 3–9%+), and X and Facebook trend below 1%. Smaller accounts typically see higher rates than accounts with millions of followers, which is why this calculator adjusts benchmarks by follower count.

How is engagement rate calculated?

The most common formula divides average interactions per post (likes + comments + shares + saves) by total followers, then multiplies by 100. Some marketers use reach or impressions instead of followers; the follower-based version used here is the standard for comparing accounts and media kits.

Why is TikTok engagement higher than Instagram?

TikTok's For You feed shows content to people who don't follow you and makes liking and commenting very low-friction, so interaction counts relative to followers run much higher. Instagram engagement is steadier but lower, concentrated among your existing followers. Always compare rates within the same platform, not across platforms.

Why does engagement rate matter?

It measures whether your audience actually cares, not just how big it is. Brands use it to price sponsorships, algorithms use engagement signals to decide reach, and tracking it over time tells you which content formats genuinely resonate.
